Stanford Water Polo Club Parents and Athletes:

Age Group Practice Reminder:  Just a reminder that all Age Group Intermediate and Advanced athletes have workouts tonight at Stanford from 6:15-8:15 pm.

Age Group Spring League Comes To A Close:  We want to congratulate all our athletes that participated in this years Spring League.  The entire coaching staff was impressed by the amount of improvement seen from the first weekend of game play to this past weekend’s games.  All of our athletes did a great job of being true sportsmen, handling their victories with humility and their losses with dignity and grace.  We thank all the parents that helped out during the season, from driving early in the morning, to helping out at the desk during the games.

Micro Games Update:  The Micro games scheduled for Saturday, May 5th, have been moved to Saturday, May 12th.  In addition, the remaining two dates of Micro Games will be played at the Avery Aquatics Center on the campus of Stanford University.  We are excited about getting our Micros back in the water for their next round of games.

Coach Vargas Impact Training Day This Sunday:  This Sunday, 4/29, Coach Vargas and some of the Stanford Varsity athletes will run an impact training day for all Spring registered athletes.  The session will run from 11-3 pm, during which Coach Vargas will cover various aspects of the game from individual body position fundamentals to some team concepts ranging from counter attack to 6-5.  The training day is designed for all athletes regardless of practice group.  Following the clinic, the entire Stanford Varsity Team will hang out and sign autographs.  Don’t miss out on this great day of water polo to end our Spring Session.

Age Group Practice Reminder:  Just a reminder that Age Group practices resume this Thursday for all Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced athletes.  Also make note that beginning this week, and continuing for the rest of the session, all Age Group Intermediate and Advanced athletes will have Friday workouts at Stanford from 6:15-8:15 pm.

Premier League and Sunday’s High School Practice:  This Sunday, April 15th, we will be canceling the water portion of our workout, and instead, would like to have all Stanford Club athletes to attend the final four games of this weekend’s Division I Premier League Tournament.  The plan is to meet at the flagpoles in the parking lot in front of the Avery Aquatics Center for a noon (12:00 pm) departure to the East Bay.  Parents and atheltes will arrive in Moraga and as a team will watch the 7th place (1:00 pm), 5th place (2:15), 3rd place (3:30) and 1st place (4:45 pm) games.  Stanford water polo club will be covering the entry cost for all club athletes and parents who drive.  Age Group athletes participating in the Zone Spring League are also encouraged to attend the tournament following the conclusion of their games.  There will be a sign in sheet for our club at the entry gate, just be sure to sign in and wear some Stanford Club apparel.  Please note that there will be athletes who want to attend that have no means of transportation to and from the games, so we ask that all parents who are considering attending, meet at Stanford to help with the carpool.  This is a great opportunity to watch some very high level water polo which will include current and former National Team members, and the top colligate players in the country.  Also participating in the tournament for our Pacific Zone Team will be Stanford Club member James Balassone.  We encourage everyone to come on out and cheer on James and the rest of the Premier League athletes.  More information on the premier league can be found by downloading the flier here.

Age Group Spring League This Sunday 4/15: This Sunday, 4/15, will be the third of four Pacific Zone Spring League dates.  Game times, game locations, team rosters, and maps to pools are now posted below.  Parents, please make sure that athletes are at the pool no later than 30 minutes prior to the start of their first game.  We will once again need one volunteer per game to help run the desk, if you are available to help, please let one of the coaches know upon your arrival.  All athletes and parents are encouraged to attend the final games of the Division I Premier League Tournament following the conclusion of the games.  All Stanford Club athletes and parents will receive complementary admission to the games by signing in at the entry gate and wearing some club apparel.  If you know your son will not be attending, or if you have any questions, please email Coach Barnea at jbarnea@gmail.com.

Micro Games Saturday:  Our first set of Micro games will be held this Saturday, 4/14, form 9:00 am – 11:30 am at Freemont Hills Country Club in Los Altos Hills.  All athletes should plan on arriving at 9:00 am where Coach Marco Palazzo will help get all athletes set-up and ready to play their first games of the spring.  All Micro athletes that attend the games will receive complementary admission to the Stanford Women’s Water Polo match that starts at 1:00 pm.  Athletes who are interested in attending can meet Coach Marco by the back gate at 12:45 pm.  A map to Freemont Hills can by clicking here.

#1 Stanford vs. #2 UCLA:  Come on out and cheer on the #1 ranked Lady Cardinal as they take on #2 UCLA this Saturday at the Avery Aquatics Center at Stanford University.  All parents and athletes who wear red will receive a 50% discount into the game.  Come early to avoid the lines and sit back and enjoy what is sure to be one of the most exiting games of the 2007 season.

2007 BOYS’ SPRING SESSION

Dear Parents and Athletes:

Our 2007 Spring Session will begin Monday, February 26th and end Sunday, April 29th.  To ensure the highest quality of our program, we will be limiting the number of participants in each practice group.  They will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.  The enrollment period will open on Monday, February 12th and close on Thursday, February 22nd (unless we reach capacity at an earlier date), so please complete the registration at your earliest convenience to secure participation for the session.  If you are a returning member of our club, you will receive an email notification by February 13th with a link to your “short-cut” registration. Please review and update your personal information before submitting your registration.

This session will feature the following Special Events:

Coach Vargas's Impact Day: During the upcoming session Coach Vargas, along with some members of the Stanford Varsity Team, will hold an "impact day" of training for all spring registered athletes. During this "impact day," Coach Vargas and several Stanford Varsity players will personally supervise practices that are designed to have an impact on each athlete's game. Each of our club athletes will walk away with a few ideas for personal growth in the sport, with an emphasis on offensive play. For very advanced players, Coach Vargas will point to techniques that are used at the Olympic level, where Coach Vargas has played and coached. For younger players, Coach Vargas and the coaching staff will explain what the player has to accomplish to move to the next level. The goal is to put a few thoughts in each player's mind that will aid them with their personal development as they gear up towards the summer sesason.

Premier League Weekend (April 14th& 15th):  This weekend, the nation’s top male water polo players will compete in the second of three tournaments of the 2007 Division I Premier League.  The league, now in its eighth season, is comprised of the top high school, college, post-college, National and ex-National Team players.  Premier League brings elite domestic water polo to various venues throughout the country each year and features four of the nation’s top club teams and four U.S. National Zone Teams.  On Saturday, April 14th, we will attend as a club to watch some of the games (played at the SODA Center), and on Sunday, April 15th we will hold our very own Club Premier League for spring session athletes.  The Club Premier League teams will combine athletes from our 18&U/16&U/14&U/12&U age divisions in a two division format.  More details to come as they become available.

Invitational Games:  We will be inviting a club team (or multiple teams) from our area to set up some games.  Games will take place at Stanford University .  More details to come as they become available.

Intra-squad Games:  Stanford Water Polo Club will once again be setting up intra-squad competition on select Sundays.  All games will be held at Stanford University .

Legends Tournament (March 23-25): Select Stanford Age Group Athletes will participate in the first annual Legends Tournament, being hosted by the Pacific Zone. The invitational tournament will celebrate “LEGENDS of the game.” Athletes will be competing in a two division format (8th Grade & Under, and 6th grade & Under) and should prove to be educational and very competitive. Selection of athletes for these teams will take place during the Spring Session and will be based on practice attendance, attitude, ability level and availability.

San Diego County Cup (May 4-6, 2007):  For the fourth straight year, Stanford Water Polo Club will be sending teams to compete at the San Diego County Cup.  This tournament is for Age Group athletes only and is known as one of the most competitive tournaments in the country.  Selection of athletes for these teams will take place during the spring session and will be based on practice attendance, attitude, ability level and availability.

Pacific Zone Spring League: All Age Group Intermediate and Age Group Advanced athletes will participate in the Pacific Zone Spring League. The league provides athletes with great competition against other clubs from within the Pacific Zone. Competition dates are; March 18th, April, 1st, April 15th, and April 22nd

Micro Clinics: During March, we will be running five one-day clinics for beginner level athletes, ages 11 & under.  These clinics are designed to introduce the sport water polo to boys who have little to no experience. During these one-day clinics we will give athletes a basic introduction to the sport of water polo while providing them with a fun and exciting learning environment.  We encourage all of our club families to help spread the word about our Micro/Beginner Clinics! Registration for these clinics will take place at the venue on the day of each clinic.  (There will be no pre-registration.)

Micro Spring League: Stanford Water Polo Club will once again be hosting the Micro Spring League for athletes ages 11 & under. The league is designed to provide athletes in our Micro practice group with some local competition. All competitions will take place at Fremont Hills Country Club in Los Altos. Competition dates are; April 14th, April 21st, May 5th, and May 19th.

Junior Olympics Selection:  During the Spring Session, the coaching staff will be evaluating athletes for the summer Junior Olympic teams.  Our 2007 Summer Session will begin Tuesday, May 21st, 2007.  This year, the 2007 National Junior Olympics will be held in Northern California (Cupertino area ) July 28th - July 31st.  The JO Qualifying Tournament (mandatory for all athletes selected for JO’s) will be held June 2-3 for all 12&U athletes (born in 1995 and younger) and 14&U athletes (born in 1993 and 1994), June 16-17 for all 16&U athletes (born in 1991 and 1992), and June 23-24 for all 18&U athletes (born in 1989 and 1990). These dates can also be found on our Calendar.

During these one day clinics we will give athletes a basic introduction to the sport of water polo while providing them with a fun and exciting learning environment.  We encourage all of our club families to help spread the word about our Micro Clinics! Registration for these clinics will take place at the venue on the day of each clinic.  (There will be no pre-registration.)
