Stanford Water Polo Club
2007 Fall Season

Wednesday, October 24, 2007.

Fall Session Comes To A Close:   With the Fall session coming to a close, we want to thank all our athletes and parents for the time and energy they put into Stanford Water Polo Club over the past couple months. We couldn’t be prouder of our athletes and the way they have carried themselves in and around the pool deck. We look forward to seeing you all back in a couple of weeks for our winter session.

Final Micro Games This Saturday:  Our final round of Fall Micro games will take place this Saturday, 10/27.  The games will take place at Stanford University from 9:30-11:30 am.  Immediately following the game, all Micro athletes are invited to watch Stanford University as they play host to UCSB at 12:00 pm.

Final Age Group Games This Sunday:  This Sunday, 10/28, will mark the final round of Pacific Zone League games for the Fall season.  Game times, team rosters, game locations, and maps to the pools are now posted below and can be found by scrolling down on the page. With this being our final weekend of league games, we hope that all our athletes will have the opportunity to come and have some fun. Please have athletes at the pool no later than 30 minutes prior to the start of their first game.

Big Weekend Of Water Polo:  Aside from the final weekend of games for all our Age Group athletes, there are a number of big water polo matches taking place on the campus of Stanford University.  The #4 ranked Cardinal will host two MPSF matches when #9 UCSB comes to town on Saturday, followed by #4 Pepperdine on Sunday.  Both games will begin at 12:00 pm and will be played at the Avery Aquatics Center.  We encourage all our athletes to come on out and watch some of the best players in all of college water polo!

Age Group Games This Sunday (10/21):  Game times, game locations, team rosters, and maps to the pools can now be found below.  Please make sure that athletes are at the pool no later than 45 minutes prior to the start of their first game.  If your son is not listed on one of the teams, or if you have any questions regarding Sunday’s games, please email Coach Barnea at jbarnea@gmail.com.

Micro Games This Saturday (10/20):  This Saturday will mark the third round of games for our Micro group.  The games will be held at Stanford’s Avery Aquatic Center from 12:30-2:00 pm.  Please make note of the time change.

Updates From The Farm: For the first time in history, a water polo player has not one, but two color photos in yesterday's Wall Street Journal, which has a circulation of 2.4 million readers. Congratulations to former Stanford player Tony Azevedo who will appear in a series of national television ads by Bank of America. This is fantastic national publicity for our sport. By the way, although juggling a hectic schedule playing professional water polo in Europe and playing as Captain of the U.S. Water Polo team preparing for the Olympics, Tony still E-mails and talks to Coach Vargas on a regular basis.  Check out the article at http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB119241790794558947.html

Please mark your calendars for October 27th & 28th, as the Stanford Varsity water polo team returns after one month of games on the road. We need to turn out our Club in red and white and support the team in two conference games against UC Santa Barbara at Noon on October 27th, and Pepperdine at Noon on October 28th. These will be tough, competitive games, and your first chance to see the team that is playing at a new level. Our club athletes can learn so much about the game if they watch these games closely. A final note: parents and athletes should feel free to meet the players after a game, ask questions, ask about training tips, ask about diet, sleep etc. Remember, the Varsity players were once the size of your children and they are thrilled to meet the youth players of today!

Special congratulations to former Stanford Club player Ryan Fortune who scored the game winning goal in the 4th overtime period against CAL in last weekend's important SoCal Tournament. This is Ryan's final season at Stanford and he has been a standout not only in the pool, but also in the challenging Computer Science major at Stanford. Way to go Ryan, we are so proud of you!!!

See you all on October 27th & 28th.

The Practice Groups are now posted on the Practice Groups & Schedule page.

Below you will find the 2007 Fall Session information.  Please read the information carefully before registering.

Registration is now open! Click here for the Registration Form.*
Registration will close Thursday, August 30th.  Anyone registering after August 30th will need to add the $30 late fee to their payment. (All registration materials must also be postmarked by August 30th to avoid the late fee.) If you have any questions regarding registration, please email Dawn at stanfordwaterpoloclub@yahoo.com

*All returning club members who have participated since the 2006 Fall Session should have received an email with their short-cut registration renewal. Please review and update the information before submitting your registration.

Our Fall Session is designed for boys ages 14 and under who are not yet in high school. There is no minimum age or skills requirement, however, each athlete must demonstrate basic water safety and swimming skills.  We strongly recommend that athletes are able to swim 100 yards in less than 2 minutes and 30 seconds.

We will have three different divisions for the Fall Session based on age and ability level:  Micro, Age Group 2 and Age Group 1.  All three divisions will participate in a Fall League with other local teams.

Session Dates:  Tuesday, September 4th - Sunday, October 28th *.

*Please note:  For select athletes, the session may go as long as November 12th.  This will be based on an athlete’s selection to a certain team, and whether that team qualifies for specific tournaments.  (Details below.)

Group Assignments*
Athletes will be assigned to one of three groups based on age, ability level, and experience.  Water polo ages are based on the year an athlete was born. Please refer to the table below to determine which group your child will most likely be assigned to. (Note: The coaching staff may assign an athlete to a group that does not correspond to his age, but rather his ability level and experience.)

Group assignments will be posted by Friday, August 31st, on the home page of our website.

*Please note:  Although the coaches assign each athlete to a group prior to the start of the session, there may be some changes in group assignments during the first few practices as the coaches assess each athlete's skills and ability level.
