2009 NATIONAL JUNIOR OLYMPICS
Stanford Water Polo Club has the distinct honor of hosting this summer's 2009 Junior Olympics. The planning process is already underway, and we will need the help of each and every one of our Club Families to help achieve our goal of making this the Junior Olympics for the history books! To get involved, or if you have any questions/ideas, please email Coach Barnea ( email ) or Dawn Vargas ( email ).

The boys' Junior Olympic competition will take place July 25th - July 28th , and we hope to qualify as many Stanford Club teams as possible. In order to participate at the Junior Olympics, teams must first qualify through the zone-qualifying tournament. (See dates above for each age group's qualifying dates). In order to be considered for a JO Team, athletes must commit and declare themselves eligible by submitting the Junior Olympic Declaration of Commitment along with the $200 deposit by Wednesday, May 27th . (The JO Declaration of Commitment form will print out with the signature pages once you submit your online registration. We encourage you to submit the Commitment form and deposit with your registration materials.) Selection to a JO team is based on, but not limited to, the following criteria: overall ability level, work ethic, and longevity with the Club.

Athletes should arrive at the pool no later than 45 minutes prior to the start of their first game. Please contact Coach Barnea any questions (email).

Regular Practices This Sunday: Practices will be held as scheduled for all groups this Sunday, 5/31. AG 1 and AG 2 workouts will be held from 9:00-11:00 am, while HS 1 and HS 2 workouts will be held from 11:00 am-1:00 pm.

Sunday workouts will remain as scheduled for all AG athletes unless otherwise noted. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

All Club BBQ, Thursday June 4th: We strongly encourage all our athletes and families to attend the club bbq on Thursday, June 4th. Stanford Club Athletes Well Represented at National Youth and Junior Tryouts: We would like to congratulate Thomas Agramonte, James Balassone, Scott Bishop, Robert Dunlevie, Mark Garner, Colin Mulcahy, Scott Platshon, and Peter Simon for being selected to the Pacific Youth and Junior teams that competed at last weekend’s National Youth Team and National Junior Team tryouts down in Southern California.

Stanford Wins 1st Annual Fischer Cup: The final day of the Fisher Cup ended in excitement as Stanford downed New York Athletic Club (NYAC) 9-8 in a back and forth contest to claim the title. Stanford fought through to the finals of the open tournament by defeating Santa Barbara, LA Water Polo, and the Newport Water Polo Foundation all in games decided by two or less goals. A tense match throughout saw NYAC lead most of the contest, before Stanford would claim a late lead and hang on for the win. It was a big day for the Wigo twins as Drac and Janson combined for six goals, Jacob Smith added the other three, while Jimmie Sandman was clutch in net for the Cardinal. Drac Wigo of Stanford was named Most Outstanding Player.

USA vs. Serbia, June 7th: The Avery Aquatics Center will once again play host to one of the best games held this year on US soil when Team USA takes on Serbia. This is a great opportunity for our club athletes to see some of the best players in the world competing in our own backyard. Stanford Water Polo Club has promotional flyers available for anyone who has access to a community bulletin board. STRENGTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (separate and optional add-on)
Stanford University Strength and Conditioning Coach Ron Forbes will be offering the Cardinal Water Polo Physical Development Academy to Stanford Club athletes. Cardinal Water Polo Physical Development Academy is a unique opportunity to train each student athlete for the physical and metabolic demands of water polo. Training is provided to each athlete by the same strength and conditioning coaches, and using the same facilities, as the Stanford Cardinal Men's and Women's Varsity water polo teams. This is an intense academy designed to provide the fundamental components necessary to maximize athletic performance and physical development. The program will be divided into three groups: High School 1 A&B, High School 2 and Age Group 1. The description for each group correlates directly with the club designation of the same name. All three groups will work out at Stanford University's new state of the art Maples Annex Sports Performance Center, using the same facilities as current Stanford athletes. For more detailed information and registration, visit the Cardinal Warrior Sports website http://cardinalwarriorsports.com/waterpolo1.htm

The Junior Olympic festivities will begin on Thursday, June 4th at 5:30 p.m. when both boys and girls Stanford Club athletes and families join for a BBQ at the Sacred Heart Aquatics Center. The BBQ is intended for each and every Club Family, and will include Stanford Varsity Athletes behind the grill, some gotta-have-it raffle prizes, and the most up-to-date planning information on the 2009 Junior Olympics. Tickets are available online at http://wopo2009.com/BBQ for both the BBQ and raffle.

Athletes selected for Junior Olympic teams to play in the Qualifying Tournament will be posted on our web site by Sunday, June 7th .

We are looking forward to a great summer!
