Dear Athletes and Families:

It was great to see such a large, enthusiatic group at Sunday's special club event.   A good time was had by all!

We have some important announcements on upcoming events:

1.  Big Game this Saturday vs. Cal at 11:30am in the Avery Aquatic Stadium Pool.  Fourth-ranked Cal will travel to second-ranked Stanford for an MPSF match against its Bay Area rival.  You won't want to miss the fierce battle between these two potent teams.  Also, Saturday is Senior Day as it is the last regular-season home game and all five graduating Seniors will be honored.  Please don't forget to wear your Stanford gear (if you don't have any, please stop by the Team Shop booth at the entrance gate)!

2.  On-line Winter Registration will commence this Sunday, November 14th.  The practice dates and tentative competition schedule are posted on the website Club Calendar.  If you are a first-time athlete to our club you may take advantage of a two-week trial period.  See registration page for details.

3.  We have launched our Winter Session Clothing line and it's available now!  Please check out the updated Team Shop on the club website at www.stanfordwaterpoloclub.com.  We have added:

Mesh Workout Shorts - Black
GildanTM Sweatpants - Black
TimberlineTM Fleece Vest - Black
Timberline TM Fleece Jacket - Black
(all bearing our club logo and available in
Men’s S, M, L, and XL sizes)

These would make wonderful holiday gifts!  We also now carry our gray logo t-shirt in youth sizes for all those up and coming water polo players.  The Team Shop will be at all remaining Stanford home games and upcoming MPSF and NCAA tournaments.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me at joanne_harmon@yahoo.com.

Stanford Boys Water Polo Club

Sunday, November 7, 2004 after the Long Beach Game at Noon. The Stanford Boy’s Water Polo Club would like to invite all fall, winter, spring & summer Stanford Water Polo Club families to a picnic and autograph session with the Stanford Varsity players immediately after the Long Beach game.

The Club will provide free food, and as a special treat we will provide free Team Photos of the Stanford Varsity for you to have autographed. This is such a cool, high quality photo; it is something you will keep forever. Sit down and enjoy a Gatorade with Tony Azevedo and ask him for advice on stretching, weightlifting, and shooting; or ask Greg Crum if he really shot a 100 mile-per-hour backhand against Pacific last year. Ask Peter Varellas how he balances a high grade point average with the rigors of training; or ask Thomas Hopkins how he became Junior Class President at Stanford University last month!!!

This is a very special event for our Club. It will be relaxed and just a great time for our Club to get together and celebrate as a family of families. Bring your parents and your grandparents.

LOCATION of the Club lunch is just behind the stadium bleachers, on the observation deck overlooking the diving stadium. Please wear your Stanford Water Polo shirt to the game.

Dear Beginner Athletes and Parents-

The beginner group will be scrimmaging with the girl's beginner group this Sunday, October 24th.  The scrimmage will take place at Avery pool and will start around 12:30 PM.  Athletes should be there at the normal practice time (12:00 Noon - 2:00 PM).

Thank you.

October 18, 2004

Dear Athletes and Parents,

There are two upcoming dates we would like you to be aware of:

1. October 20 at 8:30am. The Big Splash (CAL Varsity versus Stanford Men's Varsity) is November 20 at 9:30am at CAL Berkeley, three hours before the football game. Due to the stands being literally on top of the pool, this event is known as one of the most intense one hour competitions in college sports. Two years ago, Greg Crum received a pass from Tony Azevedo to win the game with a last-second skip shot. CAL versus Stanford Men's Varsity Water Polo is at CAL this year. To avoid the historical 2-hour lines and increasing popularity of the event, CAL is selling all seats in advance. The event may sell out on the first day of advance ticket sales. Many Stanford Water Polo Club parents take their kids to this event so we have researched the best way to get tickets. Tickets will go on sale October 20 at 8:30am at CAL's ticket office which is 1-800-462-3277. Stanford Water Polo Club parents are requesting seats in the "Gold Section which is the lower right" portion of the stands. We assume that the tickets will sell out that day as CAL's stadium only has 500 seats. The CAL Athletic Ticket office is open Monday - Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm. All tickets are $15 each  and there is a minimum $5 transaction/mailing/handling.

This is a wonderful opportunity to treat your family to one of the greatest rivalries in water polo history, and see the CAL campus awash in tail gate parties before the Big Game. Most people say this water polo game is as fun to watch as the NCAA Championship games because there is so much pride in the faces of the players. Tony Azevedo and several seniors will be playing their final Big Splash.

2. November 7, 2004 after the Long Beach Game at Noon. The Stanford Water Polo Club would like to invite all fall, winter, spring & summer Stanford Water Polo Club families to a picnic and autograph session with the Stanford Varsity players immediately after the Long Beach game. The Club will provide free food, and as a special treat we will provide free Team Photos of the Stanford Varsity for you to have autographed. Sit down and enjoy a  Gatorade with Tony Azevedo and ask him for advice on stretching, weightlifting, and shooting; or ask Greg Crum if he really shot a 100 mile-per-hour backhand against U.O.P. last year.

Thank you.

October 4, 2004

Dear Athletes and Parents,

We have some very exciting news!!  Tuesday night, October 5th, our very own Tony Azevedo, Greg Crum (who was Stanford’s leading scorer in last week’s win over USC), and former Stanford All-American Peter Hudnut, will put on a skills clinic for our age groupers during their practice! The skills clinic will run 6:15 - 8:30PM. Beginners are invited to stay until 8:30.

This will be a great experience for our fall athletes.  Azevedo, Crum, and Hudnut will talk with the boys about shooting and demonstrate a variety of shooting techniques. The boys will then join them in the water to work on what they have learned.

Only players enrolled in the Fall Program will be in the pool, but previous session Club members may attend and sit quietly on the pool deck and observe. Parents are welcome on the pool deck as well, and we can guarantee that you will never forget being so close to the shots and strategy used by the player often referred to as "the greatest player in the history of American Water Polo."

Hope to see everyone there!

John Vargas                                                 Brian Kreutzkamp

Note:  Tony Azevedo and Greg Crum will be donating their time to this Club event.  After 3 hours in the pool for their regular practice, we are deeply appreciative that these players want to help the younger athletes in the Club.

September 23, 2004

We encourage all Stanford Water Polo Club athletes and their families to come out this Saturday, September 25th to cheer on the Cardinal as they face the USC Trojans in a rematch of last year’s NCAA championship game. This promises to be collegiate water polo at its best. Wear your red and white!!

Please welcome Tony Azevedo back to his first home game since the Olympics. We hope to fill the stadium with fans who want to recognize a player who, after two Olympics and three NCAA Most Valuable Player awards, has chosen to delay a professional contract and play his final season at Stanford.

Game time is 1:30pm at Avery Aquatic Center. Due to increased attendance at water polo games, the Aquatic Center now uses the permanent ticket windows at Sunken Diamond Baseball Stadium, just 100 yards away. Tickets will go on sale at 12:00 noon on Saturday. This event is expected to be a sell-out so plan on arriving early! Tickets are $6 ($4 for youth and seniors).

Thank you,

STANFORD WATER POLO CLUB
2004 BOY’S FALL SESSION

 Dear Athletes and Parents,

Welcome to the 2004 Stanford Water Polo Club fall session!  Athletes will learn the dynamics of hard work, problem solving and good sportsmanship while developing strong friendships.  This program is designed for boys who are not currently playing high school water polo. There is no minimum age or skills requirement but it is helpful if athletes do have some swimming background.

If you know a boy who would like to try water polo, fall is a great time to start. For the fall session, a two-week trial membership is available at no charge to new members.

The Stanford Water Polo Club is the premiere program in the area, having teams ranked in the top ten and having players selected for National Teams and All-American honors at the National Junior Olympics.  All coaches have extensive playing experience and have worked with athletes of all ages and skill levels.

The fall session will run from Tuesday, September 7th through Sunday, October 31st. A tentative practice schedule is posted on the “Practice Groups & Schedule” page.

We will participate in the Fall League against other teams in our area.  A number of athletes will be selected to compete at the Speedo Cup that takes place in St. Louis, Missouri in early November.  Speedo Cup brings the best age group teams from each zone for four days of outstanding competition.  If interested, please fill out the availability for this tournament on the online registration form.

Registration is only available online (click here for Registration Form). Deadline for registration is September 5.  Registrations received after September 5th will incur a $50 late charge.   Please make sure the following forms are completed:

Team clothing is available at the “Team Shop” page. We strongly encourage everyone to have the team swimsuit for all games. The final date for ordering team clothing is Sept 10th.  This will be our only order for the fall, so please keep this in mind if you need extra suits, towels or shirts throughout the season.

To ensure the highest quality of our program, we will be limiting the number of participants in each practice group.  They will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. We are expecting all groups to be full this fall, so please register at your earliest convenience to ensure a spot.

We are looking forward to a great season!

Dear Athletes and Parents:

Congratulations to the 14&U and 12&U Junior Olympic teams this past weekend on their fine showing at the Qualifying Tournament!  The Stanford Water Polo Club had amazing success the past two weeks and we look forward to taking that momentum into Ft. Lauderdale!

The balance of your JO payment ($550) was due this past Monday, June 28.  If you have not already done so, please submit payment by Saturday, July 3.  Please deliver/mail it to Joanne Harmon, 404 Beresford Avenue, Redwood City, CA  94061.

URGENT!   We are still in need of a driver for the Long Beach FINA Tournament and Training trip.  You would depart on Tuesday, July 13 and return on Sunday, July 18.  If we do not get another driver, we will be forced to reduce the number of boys attending.

If anyone would be able to loan a van/SUV (suburban or equivalent) to this trip it would be greatly appreciated.  Please contact Joanne Harmon ASAP at joanne_harmon@yahoo.com.

Team Clothing - The towels have arrived and will be distributed at practices and game night tomorrow.  Due to a shortage of red suits from Speedo, some of the swimsuits will arrive early next week with the remainder arriving the week after.   We will distribute them as soon as we receive.

Game Night Tomorrow at Avery Aquatic Center!  Please try to come out and cheer on the high school teams tomorrow night.  Games begin at 7pm.   Competition is always fierce and entertaining!

Dear Athletes & Parents:

This is a very busy and exciting time for our club. The Junior Olympic Qualification Tournament for the 18's and 16's went extremely well.  Congratulations!  We hope you a chance to attend last night's Riekes Center presentation "The Nutrition Key".  The Riekes Center offered us this complimentary session with nutritionist David Ellis to assist our young athletes to live a happy, healthy and productive life. Emphasis was placed on issues that affect short-term and long-term health, including quick fixes, miracle foods, supplements and appropriate weight gain and loss. The presentation was thoroughly enjoyed by all that attended.

A few announcements:

1.  JO's - Because of airline requirements, the balance of the Junior Olympic trip is now due.  Most of you paid a $250 deposit so the balance due is $550. Please mail to Joanne Harmon at the address below as soon as possible.

2.  More JO's - Thank you to Mason Brutschy, Mike Child, Paul & Yannick Rochester, Mary Kiely, Janet Wilson, Bruce Avery, Bill Rollinson, Anna & Tom Cole,  Tracy Cowperthwaite, Walter Griffeth, Moris Clark, Norm Havercroft, Chris Straube and Bill Galliani for graciously stepping up to come out to Ft. Lauderdale and chaperone our athletes. It is greatly appreciated.

To all Stanford Water Polo Club families,

We are absolutely ecstatic to announce that NCAA All-American & Academic All-American Mike Derse has joined the Stanford Water Polo Club staff. Mike will be running the Water Polo Conditioning program which runs from June 14 – July 25 from 5pm – 6:30pm at Stanford. This is an incredible opportunity for your son to bond with an athlete who some regard as the greatest defensive water polo player in Stanford’s history. Last fall, most of you recall Mike’s heroic efforts as he guarded each of the three USC hole men for four quarters as well as two overtime periods in the NCAA Championships.

Biography: Mike Derse graduated with a 3.67 Grade Point Average from Stanford and was accepted to the Graduate School of Engineering where he will study Mechanical Engineering. Mike scored 50 goals his Junior year at Stanford, second only to Tony Azevedo. An amazing utility player, Mike once scored five goals against USC when Coach Vargas called upon him for offensive power. In other games, Mike would bypass offense and focus 100% of his effort on holding an opposing team’s top player to zero goals. Mike has followed a rigorous conditioning and stretching program at Stanford, and has legs like an All-American goalie. To see photo highlights of his Stanford water polo career click here.

In the Water Polo Conditioning program for the Club, Mike will emphasize good stroke technique and efficiency so that your son can play water polo with more stamina and strength. Plyometrics and in-water legwork will also be emphasized. Mike swims the 200 yard freestyle in 1:43 and was an all-CIF High School Individual Champion in swimming. Coach Vargas regards Mike as “one of the greatest  (and brightest) athletes he has coached in water polo.”

If your son wants to sample the Water Polo Conditioning feature of our Club, please come on Monday. You can then make your decision after the first evening. Mike is glad to work with beginning water polo players, as well as elite high school athletes. The Conditioning program is an optional add-on to the Stanford Water Polo Club summer experience. Cost is $135.

P.S. One of the huge advantages of your son’s involvement with Mike Derse’s Water Polo Conditioning program is that Mike will also help out with the Tuesday and Friday night summer league games. This will allow Mike to watch the conditioning participants play water polo and then accelerate their improvement through rapid feedback.

Please introduce yourself to Mike at the first opportunity and tell him how happy we are to have him spend time with our kids.

A Message from John Tanner, Head Coach
Stanford Women's Water Polo

 Dear Club Families,

We are 15 days away from Avery to Athens, the Olympic Gold Medal game preview between current world #1 ranked USA and defending World Cup Champs Hungary.  This is the only chance to watch our Olympic Team in action before they head off to Athens.

The US team was named yesterday, and four Stanford alums and two former Cal students are on the squad.  Margie Dingeldein, Jackie Frank, Brenda Villa and Ellen Estes are the Stanford grads.  I believe three of them will be in the starting seven.

The Hungarian team is considered to be the top shooting team in the world, so the game should be high scoring.  Hungary has a long history of great men's water polo teams, and their women's teams have lived up to that high standard.  If you miss this game, you will miss Alex Tarics, a 1928 Hungarian Olympic Gold Medalist in water polo, the oldest living Hungarian Olympic champion.  Alex, who lives in Marin County, will be on hand for Avery to Athens.

As hosts of this event, we have the opportunity to show how much
Stanford Water Polo club supports the Olympic Team.  These amazing athletes have risen to the top of the sport and have the chance of a lifetime - the chance to win an Olympic Gold Medal.  And it is the chance of a lifetime for us.  What are the chances we could have the top two teams in the world in our home pool on the eve of the Olympic Games? We need to have Avery Stadium rocking for this game.  We need you to sell tickets and talk up the event.  Once the Olympics begin, everyone will be talking about the Games.  And the US women's water polo team will be the talk of the town.  Avery to Athens will be the next best thing to being at the Olympics- better really because we don't have Athens'  humidity.  Don't miss it, and don't let your friends and neighbors miss out.

Tickets can be purchased from any of the female club players or by going to the website www.avery2athens.com and clicking on the logo to find the link to tickets.  Tickets are $10 for 6-18 yr olds, $15 for adults (5 and under free).  Checks can be made payable to TWPC.

15 days and counting . . .

Best Regards,
John Tanner

Dear Athletes and Parents,

Great news!  We have been informed by the organizers of the Long Beach FINA Tournament that we can have some extra time before we have to purchase our tickets for the tournament.  If you are interested in attending this once-in-a-lifetime event please have your form/payment in to Joanne Harmon by Thursday, June 3rd.  To sign-up just click on this link, 2004FINATrip and print out the form.  The list of attendees is shown below.

More great news!  The Stanford Men's Varsity team is also traveling to Southern California that week and will train with some local college teams.  They are purchasing their FINA tickets with our club and will be sitting along side of us taking in the spectacular competition.  This will be a wonderful memory for your son.  Please try not to miss this one!

If you or your entire family would like to travel to the tournament along with your son we will take reservations on a first-come, first-served basis.  There is availability on the bus as well as discounted rooms at the team hotel ($99 + tax, includes breakfast).  If you would like to drive your personal car, we can make room reservations and order your FINA tickets for you to make sure that you sit with the club.  Please email joanne_harmon@yahoo.com ASAP if you would like to come along.

Hope to see you there!

May 5, 2004

Dear Athletes and Parents,

Welcome to the 2004 Stanford Water Polo Club Summer Session!  We will be having a mandatory informational meeting for athletes and parents on Tuesday, May 18th at  7:00p.m. on the Stanford University campus (location to be determined, please check website closer to the date).  We will outline our plans and expectations for the summer at that time.

If you were registered for our 2004 Spring Session, you will receive a separate email within 24 hours with instructions to simplify your summer registration. New athletes must register online (go to the Registration page and click on the Registration Form link). Deadline for registration is May 21st.  Registrations received after May 21st will incur a $50 late charge.   Please make sure the following items are completed:

  • Summer Registration Form
  • Junior Olympic Declaration of Availability
  • Code of Conduct Form
  • Parental Consent to Treat a Minor
  • Team Clothing Order (optional, but we strongly encourage everyone to have the team swimsuit for all games)

Included in your registration fee is a Stanford Water Polo t-shirt and water bottle.  The 2004 clothing line will be on display at the mandatory meeting.  Please order online from the Team Shop page of the website. The final date for ordering team clothing is May 25th.  This will be our only order for the summer, so please keep this in mind if you need extra suits, towels or shirts throughout the season.

Athletes will be placed into 1 of 6 workout groups.   Due to the number of athletes and level of tournament play in the summer session, you must practice with your age group (i.e. if you are not currently in or entering high school in 2004 you will be placed in the Age Group practice group, etc.).  Groups will be assigned by the coaching staff and be formally announced and posted on the website May 22nd.

This year we will be offering two optional add-on programs to our summer session.  Brief descriptions of the two programs are:

SWIM CONDITIONING
One and one-half hours of water polo conditioning.  Including, but not limited to: swimming, dry land, plyometrics, and in-water legwork.  Designed for athletes who would like to improve their individual swimming strength and skills.  At least one hour of each practice will be dedicated to swimming.  Swim sets will be geared towards water polo conditioning and each athlete's ability.  Cost:  $135 per athlete.

PROGRAMMED FITNESS AND NUTRITION - RIEKES CENTER
At the Riekes Center, they not only help you define your goals, they show you how to achieve them.  Sometimes even exceed them.  They can be anything.  Training to be a better athlete in a specific sport.  Gaining flexibility.  Building explosive power.  Overall fitness and better nutrition. Rehabilitating an injury.  You can do all this in a state-of-the-art facility using proven training methods and learning under the guidance of an expert staff that will give you the resources and knowledge to reach your goals.  Our athletes will have an individual evaluation and program designed for them.  For more information, including training dates and times, go to the Registration page and click on the Riekes Center link. Registration and payment will be handled directly through the Riekes Center. Cost will vary with the training program selected.

In addition to our participation in the 2004 National Junior Olympics located this year in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida we have scheduled a club-wide trip to the Long Beach FINA tournament where we will witness water polo promising to be the highest level play outside of attending the Olympics in Greece.

LONG BEACH FINA TOURNAMENT & TRAINING TRIP  We will be traveling as a club to the Long Beach FINA Tournament from July 15 - 18, 2004.  We will train with SoCal teams during the day and attend the FINA tournament at night.  More details to come at the athlete/parent meeting.  Cost will be approximately $250-$300 per athlete.

To ensure the highest quality of our program, we will be limiting the number of participants in each practice group.  They will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. We are expecting all groups to be full this summer, so please register at your earliest convenience to ensure a spot.

We are looking forward to a great summer!

May 1, 2004

Dear Athletes and Parents,

We hope you can find a few moments to come out and see your son play in his final tournament of the Spring Session on Sunday, May 2.  The players have developed new skills over the past few months, and it will be fun to see them showcase their talents in the stadium pool.  Feel free to ask questions and talk to the coaches afterwards.  We are getting excited about the summer competition coming our way.  For this Sunday's schedule, please check the website at www.stanfordwaterpoloclub.com and click on "Calendar".

The 2004 Summer Session Registration information will be available online in the very near future.  We hope to have it launched this weekend. See you at the pool.

To:       All Stanford Water Polo Club Athletes and Parents

From:  Coach Vargas & the Coaching Staff

ARE YOU READY FOR IMPACT WEEKAs we head to the final stretch of the Spring Program, we hope you will make every effort to attend Coach Vargas' Impact Week May 3 - 5.  Parents are welcome to come out and watch!

During this week, Coach Vargas and some cool Stanford players will personally supervise practices that are designed to have an impact on each athlete's game.  Each of our club athletes will walk away with a few ideas for personal growth in the sport, with an emphasis on offensive play.  For very advanced players Coach Vargas will point to techniques that are used at the Olympic level, where Coach Vargas has played and coached.  For example, can the advanced player master at least eight types of shots?  For younger players, Coach Vargas and the coaching staff will explain what the player has to accomplish to move to the next level.

The goal of Impact Week is to put a few thoughts in each player's mind, and with summer tournaments rapidly approaching there will be some great opportunities for each athlete to "try their new moves".  A few thoughts of preparation as you head toward Impact Week:

1. Arrive 20 minutes before practice and begin stretching immediately.  It will do no good to show the coaches your best 6-meter shot if you are not warmed up.

2. Get good sleep during the week.  Studies have shown that athletes can not focus on learning what it takes to advance to a new level unless the athlete is listening intently and has the focus to attempt the change with full energy.

3. During Impact Week write down 1, 2, or 3 things that you want to change in your game this summer.  Write these items on an index card and put it in the top drawer of your desk.  Be proud as you experiment with what it takes to make these changes.  Each time you look at the index card, ask yourself if you have worked hard enough to try these new aspects of your game in a tournament.

4. Think of what you want to ask Coach Vargas.  He and the coaches are available before and after practices to answer your individual questions.

5. Bring a notebook and pencil.  You might want to take notes during the chalk talk portion of the practice.

6. Get excited.  The Sydney Olympic Head Coach is about to challenge our Stanford Water Polo Club athletes.

P.S.  Parents, use Impact Week to assess your own role in your son's development.  Are you happy with his sleep, strength training (if old enough to start it), nutrition, swim technique and mental outlook on the sport. Do you have questions for the coaches or the Stanford players?  Do you want to know when strength conditioning should kick in?  If your son really wants to improve his arm speed when shooting then ask Coach Vargas and the coaches what strategies they believe in for younger players.  If your son is left-handed, do you want to know how Coach Vargas is coaching his All-American left-hander Peter Varellas?  Is your son a tenacious driver?  Then maybe you want to know what tricks Thomas Hopkins is using as one of the most creative drivers in the country.  And Coach Vargas has known Tony Azevedo for most of his life, so if you want to know how Tony trained at the exact age that your son is at, please ask.  The Coaching staff wants to get as many questions answered as possible "prior" to the start of the Summer session when the Stanford Water Polo Club wants to begin tournament play with explosive play!

The SCHEDULE for Impact Week is as follows:

Monday, May 3rd - High School Drivers and High School Goalies 7:00-9:00 PM
Tuesday, May 4th - Age Group Drivers and Age Group Goalies 7:00-9:00 PM
Wednesday May 5th - All 2M players (offense and defense) and all Goalies 7:00-9:00 PM

Note:  All athletes should come to one night, goalies should come to two. Thursday and Friday schedules (May 6 and 7th) will stay the same (see club calendar)

See you at the pool,

February 19, 2004

Due to an unforeseeable emergency, the Pacific Zone Development Team tryouts will be hosted at Acalanes High School in Lafayette instead of Miramonte High School . Undoubtedly, some athletes will be affected by this last minute shift of venue and may be late to the tryout. As a result, we will not be making any cuts after the first tryout and ask that all participants attend both tryouts on the 21st and 28th of February.  The times as originally published will remain the same.  Please pass this information along to any interested parties.  We are sorry for any inconvenience that this may have caused.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

There will not be practice April 9th – 16th due to Easter Vacation.  Practice will resume on Sunday, April 18th.  All practices will be at Avery Aquatic Center, Stanford University.

We are launching a new team clothing line for 2004. The on-line catalog will be available on our website very soon.  We have a new design for the team t-shirt and sweatshirt.  This line will also be available during our summer session.

We have added an area on the registration form for those of you who would like to contribute to a scholarship fund that would help an athlete participate in our program but might not be able to due to financial hardship.  This donation would be tax-deductible as we are a non-profit organization.

Dear Athletes and Families,

Just a quick reminder that all USWP registrations must be renewed at your earliest convenience.  If you do not have a multi-year membership then your 2003 registration has expired as of January 1, 2004.   If it is not renewed by next weekend's tournament then you will not be able to compete.  To check on your registration status or find information on how to renew your membership just click on the link to our website www.stanfordwaterpoloclub.com and click on the registration navigation bar.

Hope to see you all at SUNDAY'S practices.  The clothing orders are in and will be distributed during both practice sessions.

Hoping you all had a happy new year.

December 11, 2003

As the winter season progresses we will be participating in the Pacific Zone Winter League.
The league's playing dates are as follows:

1/10,11        1/24,25       2/7,8

Open and 16's will play on Saturdays (1/10, 1/24, 2/7)
18's and 12's/14's will play on Sundays (1/11, 1/25, 2/8)

We will be entering multiple teams into various playing brackets. For us to best gauge how many teams we enter and what brackets we enter them into we need to know who will not be able to attend certain weekends. Please note that by not informing us that you will be missing a certain weekend we are assuming that you will be there to play. If you cannot make a playing date, please complete the Game Availability Form and bring it to practice on December 14th.

December 8, 2003

The Stanford Water Polo Club will be offering a limited selection of team clothing for the winter session. We have selected items that would be appropriate for this colder season.

We want the athletes and family members to have their clothing as soon as possible. In order for this to happen we need to have all orders in by the second team practice (this Sunday, December 14) and we will place the order the next day. Please give them to Joanne Harmon or your coach. Sorry, no exceptions.

Please click on the "Team Shop" button and print out the Adobe Acrobat form. Swimsuit sizes are available in 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34 and 36. If you have any problems downloading the form or any questions, please do not hesitate to email Joanne Harmon at joanne_harmon@yahoo.com.

2003 NCAA MEN’S WATER POLO SELECTIONS

INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA Men's Water Polo Committee announced today the four teams participating in the 2003 National Collegiate championship.

This year's championship, hosted by Stanford University, will be held December 6-7.

In the first game, the University of Southern California (22-3) will play the U.S. Naval Academy (25-6) followed by Stanford (21-4) versus Loyola Marymount University (16-13). Game times are 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Pacific time respectively on December 6.

Conferences receiving automatic qualification were: Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, the Collegiate Water Polo Association and the Western Water Polo Association. The remaining team was selected at large without geographical restrictions.

A four-team, single-elimination tournament will be played, with a game to determine third place.

Last year, Stanford defeated University of California, Berkeley 7-6 to capture its tenth championship.

Since the beginning of the championship in 1969, no team from outside the state of California has ever reached the championship final.

We encourage the Stanford Club team to come out and support the Cardinal. This event is expected to be a sell-out so buy your tickets early! Students can purchase the two-day all-session pass for only $15.00, adults $25.00. Wear your red and white! Just click on http://gostanford.ocsn.com/sports/m-wpolo/ncaa2003/ for more information.

November 17, 2003

Congratulations to the 14&U Team for their Silver Medallist finish in St. Louis, Missouri this past weekend at the 2003 Speedo Cup Tournament. The boys played extremely well and the coaches did an incredible job. Scott Platshon was the recipient of the Jody Campbell Award for his outstanding play. Well done!

Nov. 16, 2003
Long Beach, Ca. - The second-ranked Stanford men's water polo team jumped out to a 6-0 first period lead and never looked back as the Cardinal scored a 12-8 victory over eighth-ranked Long Beach State in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game on Sunday.

On Saturday, Peter Varellas, Tony Azevedo and Thomas Hopkins each scored three goals to lead the second-ranked Stanford Cardinal to a 12-6 win over UC Irvine in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action Saturday at the Anteater Aquatics Complex.

Stanford returns home on Nov. 22 (10 a.m.) to face Bay Area rival Cal. We encourage the Stanford Club team to come out and support the Cardinal at this coming Saturday’s Big Splash. Wear your red and white!!
